I have a lot of things. Especially on my desktop.
Not the digital one. The real life one.
Here are a few of my (favorite!) things. I have a hand-sized green rubber ring that I sometimes squeeze when I’m on phone calls. Helps me concentrate (and increase my grip strength). A paw print of my recently deceased dog, Skittles, is displayed next to pictures of my wife and daughter. A small stack of cards from my wife, words of encouragement. A coaster with a photo of one of my first dogs, Wendy.
Lots of things are sitting next to my laptop, cluttering the space, and all there in (my) perfect order.
So. Much. Stuff.
What we save, saves us. -Barbara Kingsolver
If you were to show me each of the things on your desk, I know there would be a story behind each one. Where it came from, who gave it to you.
That’s interesting and all, but here’s my big question about each of these things:
Why?
I want to know how you interact with and use the things. Is it in times of stress, joy, solace, comfort, or maybe you just haven’t cleaned up your desk in a while?
Because in that interaction is where the thing is saving you.
